Thode Filmy Hai Hum by Mehak Mirza Prabhu
Poem Name???Thode Filmy Hai Hum
Poet/Performer???Mehak Mirza Prabhu
Bollywood has become an indispensable part of every Indian?s life. You can love Bollywood films or you can hate them, but you definitely can?t hide away from them or ignore them. To be honest, every Indian, at one point in time or the other, did watch and follow Bollywood.
Once the Bollywood bug bites you, there is no going back. ?Filmigiri? starts running in our veins. Girls wait for when will their dupatta get stuck in a guy?s shirt?s button. Boys wait for the time when a girl will look at them with twinkling eyes and just smile. After all, ?thode filmy hai hum?.
Mehak Mirza Prabhu?s spectacular storytelling in ?Thode Filmy Hai Hum? is a rollercoaster of emotions. The title makes it clear that the performance is going to deal with drama and ?filmigiri?. What makes the performance wonderful is the way she deals with this ?filmigiri? and incorporates it in her piece. She is even dressed as a typical Bollywood wife???red saree, hand full of bangles, except she doesn?t have ?sindoor?.
She begins the performance with the most Bollywood-y dialogue ever????Rahul, naam toh suna hi hoga?. She goes on to clarify that she is talking about her husband, who usually comes to the venue for open mics. She requests a member of the audience to look at the door and let her know when her husband walks in. It is anniversary today, and hence she has come here, dressed in red (her husband?s favourite colour), to surprise him.
She then reminisces about her first year after marriage, when her husband would every day, apply ?sindoor?. When she would chastise him about his ?filmigiri?, he would retort ?Ek chutki sindoor ki kimat tum kya jaano, k.k.kiran?. She clarifies, that her name isn?t Kiran either, and it is Simran and admits that ?thode filmy hai hum?.
Mehak, as Simran, then goes on to list the usual Bollywood clich?s, which were a part of her married life. Right from helping her husband wear his tie to waiting for him to come back from office, she unabashedly admits that ?thode filmy hai hum?.
This classic, romantic, dreamy life comes to a sudden halt when Rahul starts coming home late from work. On being asked, he gives the excuse of being with friends, and Simran buys it. But she is shattered when his friends tell him that he no longer meets them. All sorts of thoughts start plaguing Simran?s mind. And as the audience, even we start to think that her husband was cheating on her.
But, turns out, that Rahul was a performer, who kept this hobby of his a secret. Now, Simran wanted to see her Rahul perform and as a surprise, bought tickets to his next show. But like the story of a true Bollywood flick, even the performance is full of many twists and turns.
Mehak?s performance and storytelling skills are astounding. She is no longer Mehak, she has become Simran, Simran who is waiting for her Rahul. The pauses she takes, the voice modulation, facial expressions- add weight to the terrifically written piece.
The piece is nearly 7mins long, but once you start watching it, you don?t even realize how time has passed. You are stuck to your seats and don?t even feel like blinking, because you might end up missing on something. Such is the captivating performance given by Mehak.
In a country, where everyone secretly enjoys being dramatic and filmy, but is embarrassed to admit it in public, ?Thode Filmy Hai Hum? is a welcome break. Full of Bollywood clich?s and unexpected plot-twists, this performance is sure to leave you astounded.
