A terrible tale of corruption, indifference, and systemic violence starts when 10 year old daughter (Kali) of an aspiring actor disappears, she is also a step-daughter of high ranking policeman. Ugly is all about the efforts or rather the lack of it to really find her. The film's title Ugly refers to ugliness of human's life where we try to upstage each other.

The movie has a smell of dark, reality and also the "masterclass" Anurag Kashyap.
Inspite of having a very common plot still the narration of the movie is done with a commendable work.
As it's a Anurag Kashyap movie ,lots of parallel stories are going around. Each and every character is written so well and so much unusual yet realistic scenes. Cast is supremely fabulous.

Ronit Roy as an IPS & as a step-father & as a woman's second husband - in all three shades, he is just outstanding. His expressions when he shows his anger are too good.
Ronit roy has done a brilliant job as a Cop, whenever he comes on screen in this movie you get a little scared.
Rahul Bhat is an impressive actor, he plays the lead role brilliantly. Dark shades under his eyes and beard face look describes the dedication from him towards his role. Tejaswini perfectly suits in her role. Vinit Singh is as usual fantastic. Surveen Chawala is good.

The movie is so real, for an Indian audience he would not be surprised with a lot of things as he/she know the system, but he would definitely be surprised to see the limit of it, and to see what could be wrong. The movie shows the limit of efforts one can put and how desperate one gets. The humans are shown as parasites surviving on others, and how UGLY can they get for their survival and dreams. And when these dreams don't fulfill as planned things get UGLY

Trivia :

Anurag Kashyap personally requested the parents of child actor Anshikaa Shrivastava who played Kali Varsheney, not to allow her to see the film because of its dark theme.

The actors, supposedly, weren't given a hard script. They were given dialogues & a scene was described to them and were made to act accordingly, on spot.

The lead actor Rahul Bhat used to stay in the same apartment building that Anurag Kashyap stayed in, in his struggling days.

This movie was made and was ready for release in 2013 itself but since the director Anurag Kashyap wanted the statutory warning regarding Smoking to be removed he did not release the film till Dec 2014. Fighting a lone battle with authorities, he finally had to give in keeping in mind the monetary aspect of the producers.

Debut Hindi film of Girish Kulkarni who is a national award winning actor in Marathi films.

Ugly premiered at the Cannes film festival and received what Filmfare called a "great response.

This underrated film is a Must watch!
